Training

Continuing Education

Sherman Fire-Rescue must comply with two state agencies regarding fire and EMS training. The Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) requires each member have a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education each year. The Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) requires EMS personnel continuing education based on their certification level. An EMT-Basic must complete 72 hours of training within a four-year certification period and a paramedic must complete 144 hours of training during a four-year period.

Monthly Training

In addition to these requirements, Sherman Fire-Rescue has set a standard of 20 hours of fire training per month. This training will meet the Insurance Service Office (ISO) requirements for improving the city’s Property Protection Classification (PPC).

Training Division

The Training Division administers a comprehensive training and education program that meets all state and national standards set by TCFP and TDSHS. The Training Division is responsible for continuing education and renewals of all fire and EMS certifications. Most of our firefighters are certified at levels well above the minimum requirements of the department and the TCFP. The Training Division also coordinates training for our Technical Rescue Team. This team consists of 18 firefighters that are certified in advanced rescue techniques: ropes, high-angle rescue, swift-water rescue, trench rescue and confined-space rescue. We are proud to have a first-class training program that allows our department to be prepared to serve the community and its visitors.
