Pollution Prevention Objectives
Pollution prevention (P2) is reducing or eliminating waste at the source by modifying production processes, promoting the use of non-toxic or less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques and re-using materials rather than putting them into the waste stream.
The Environmental Protection Agency identifies P2 as a key policy in national environmental protection activities. Pretreatment services is responsible for inspecting facilities that store, manufacture or use hazardous, toxic or polluting materials. Inspectors ensure that facilities utilize and dispose of hazardous materials properly, thereby preventing environmental contamination.
Pretreatment Services staff is committed not only to protecting our receiving streams, but also to working in cooperation with local facilities. Staff may provide consultations, educational materials, chemical storage reviews and Information to assist facilities in regulation compliance. In addition to commercial pollution prevention activities, the Pretreatment Services staff conducts routine public outreach events to include residential P2 information such as oil and grease disposal and proper management of expired pharmaceuticals.
